The Women's International Art Club was founded in Paris in 1900, as the Paris International Art Club. At this time there was very little opportunity for women to exhibit their art work, and as an exhibiting society the Club was instrumental in bringing the work of women sculptors and painters to the notice of the general public. The idea of a women's art club originated in 1899 with a handful of artists in a Paris studio at a time when most women were unable to take part in professional activities. The object of the club was to enable women of all nationalities to arrange exhibitions of a professional standard.
